Question about a job I'm interested in (delivery driver for a catering company)?

Okay ,very briefly I will share some history so you can better answer my question. I'm 18 I've never held a job ( NJ Labor laws suck, I spent most of my time other places, i.e after school events, youth group and roaming the malls of NJ with my friends). I got my permit and my driver's license at 17. I've had my license since January 2008, I have no accidents, no moving violations, I've never even been so much as looked at by the police. I also have a clean criminal record.

That was my background, here is my question.

Since this is the first time applying for a job, what would this interviewer be looking for from his prospective employees? How can I convince him to overlook my lack of job experience? Is it appropriate to wear a white dress shirt, a pair of black dress pants and black converse? The very little I know about the company, is that they seem to cater only fruit. In their job listing they are offering "up to" 20/hr, what should I ask for when he/she mentions my desired salary? Most importantly, what can I do to guarantee that I will get this job?

Thanks in advance for all of your help!

well, your driving record means a lot.

Yes, I would dress nice, not overkill. just comfortabe.

What the interviewer will be looking for is your attitude, and do you know the area. You might start off just helping someone. it's a start.

As far as pay, you never start at the top.good luck

IDK about them converse. get somekind of dress shoe, maybe even a tie and sport jacket.

Reply:The clean driving record is going to be great! The interviewer is going to want to believe that the customers are going to like you, therefore the interviewer must like you. Confidence is very key here. If you don't have experience you need to have confidence in what you have done. For example, "I've never done catering but I learn fast, you will never have to tell me how to do something twice. I promise you that." I said that on an interview and they hired me on the spot. Also, you never bring up salary first. If they ask you say something reasonable or avoid the question. Like, "I know what minimum wage is and I'm sure that is reasonable." (with this response they will either tell you they can do better than min wage or just say ok, but most likely the job will pay better than min wage because catering hours suck.) or you can avoid the question like, "I would just like a fair wage that is based on my performance. Wherever you start me would be fine, but I want to prove to you what I'm worth."

As far as dress goes you always want to be dressed better than the current employees. If they wear very nice formal clothes than you dress more formal. You can't get more formal than a suit. Sometimes that's overkill but only if you are applying at Hollister or Abercrombie and Fitch. A catering company wants someone professional!!
